Becoming Whole Again: Finding the Healer in each of Us
Strand Union Building, Ballroom A
Dr. Anthony Goodman will present a lecture entitled "Becoming Whole Again: Finding the Healer in Each of Us" on Monday, October 7th, 2013 at 7 PM in the SUB Ballrooms. This event is part of the Year of Engaged Leadership Speaker Series, presented by the Honors College. This lecture is centered on the theme of Healing.
Dr. Goodman's latest book, "None But The Brave: A Novel of Surgeons During WWII', is based on the diaries of Dr. Goodman's mentor, Dr. Alfred Hurwtiz. He will discuss the back-story of Dr. Hurwitz and the making of the book, as well as aspects of healing in a war/disaster setting as opposed to peacetime. Dr. Goodman will share some of his own experiences working on the Navajo Indian Reservation as a medical student, and being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of patients showing up at a log cabin in the wilderness; and finding peace in treating "one patient at a time."
Dr. Goodman will also talk about the importance of mentors: for example, the sixth grade teacher who encouraged him to become a surgeon when he allowed him to do an autopsy on a dead baby bird, through which he discovered how it died. Dr. Goodman will pay homage to the long line of surgeons who literally held his hand on his path to becoming a trained surgeon.
Tickets are free may be reserved by calling 994-4110.
