'Regionalism & Realism' Dr. Vincent Canizaro - A Critical Rediscovery of the Northern Rockies

Friday, October 11, 2013 from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Leon Johnson Hall, Room 339

Montana State University College of Arts & Architecture is proud to present Dr. Vincent B.  Canizaro, who will present his lecture "Regionalism & Realism" on Friday, October 11th at 5:30 p.m., in Leon Johnson, Room 339. His lecture will focus on how local experiences - where you are; wider perspectives - what you do; and meaning - how you think about experiences and perspectives, matter. His lecture is presented in conjunction with the symposium, A Critical Rediscovery of the Northern Rockies. A short reception will follow in the Lower Gallery of Cheever Hall.

Vincent B. Canizaro is the Chair of the Department of Architecture and teaches design and graduate courses in architectural theory focused on the issues of regionalism and environmental architecture & sustainability.

He is the author of Architectural Regionalism: Collected Writings on Place, Identity, Modernity, and Tradition in 2007 with Princeton Architectural Press.

Quote

"My thesis is that regionalism, as a set of practices and theories, is a misunderstood and neglected discourse that, in practice, is central to architecture. In the same way that "all politics are local," so it is with architecture, whether by accident or by design. Regionalism is the preeminent discourse within architecture that focuses on design in terms of particularity and locale."

He has a forthcoming essay entitled: Regionalism, Place Specificity, and Sustainable Design, in Pragmatic Sustainability (edited by Steven Moore)with MIT Press.

The symposium, "A critical discovery of the Northern Rockies", asks the question of how we should understand where we live. This interdisciplinary event is sponsored by the College of Arts and Architecture at Montana State University

There are exhibitions, performances and many presentations from MSU faculty and other national and international participants, including architects, anthropologists, artists geographers, historians, film makers and musicians.

The Keynote speech is on Friday the 11th October and other events are on Saturday 11th October
