New Greg Owens Play OBSCENE LAWLESS HIDEOUS DANGEROUS DIRTY VIOLENT AND YOUNG to be read in MSU Black Box Theater

Lila Michael of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will direct a staged reading of the new Greg Owens play OBSCENE LAWLESS HIDEOUS DANGEROUS DIRTY VIOLENT AND YOUNG January 11th, 2014 at the Black Box Theatre on campus at Montana State University. Doors open at 7pm and the reading begins at 7:30pm. There will be a talkback after reading with the cast and the playwright. The reading is free with the generous support of the Dean of Arts and Architecture.

This will be the first public reading of the first installment of the Tulsa Trilogy (a prequel to The Life and Times of Tulsa Lovechild). OBSCENE LAWLESS HIDEOUS DANGEROUS DIRTY VIOLENT AND YOUNG is part one. Owens' already published script, The Life and Times of Tulsa Lovechild is part two. It was produced in MSU's Black Box Theater in 2009 to a sold out run. The final installment of the series, coming later in 2014, is The Night They Drove Old Berkeley Down.

OBSCENE LAWLESS HIDEOUS DANGEROUS DIRTY VIOLENT AND YOUNG is set in 1986. The Gipper reigns supreme. Tulsa Lovechild (read by Portland based actress Jess Manning) is 18 and torn between her natural instincts to rebel against the idealism of her ex-60s activist mother Sylvia (Lila Michael) and her first serious crush on Carnegie (MSU Film student Spencer Mirabal), a member of an underground group of Gen-X radicals organizing to take over the government.

When Tulsa's stepfather, Stockton (Tom Watson of MSU and Shakespeare in the Parks), is brought out of retirement by his former partner, Special Agent Houston Dallas (Shakespeare in the Parks and Actors Theatre of Montana) to infiltrate the plot, Sylvia follows all of them to a secret meeting in the northern California redwood forest in an attempt to save Carnegie, her family, and what's left of the movement.

Stage directions will be read by Colter Langan (Montana SHAKES, Actors Theatre of Montana, EAGLE radio). He will also serve as the evening's talkback moderator.

Owens has had more than 100 productions and readings in New York, London, Chicago, Los Angeles and around the United States, including the 2012 workshop of another new script called Sisyphus, Wyoming at Creede Repertory Theatre in Colorado. Since moving to Bozeman in 1999, he has written and directed shows with Greg Keeler and the Vigilante Theatre Company, taught at Montana State University, and worked with the Bozeman Youth Initiative, where he is the Executive Director. His other published work includes the full-length play Home Front and the one-act collection, U.S. Blues. In the late 90s, Greg was part of the creative team at Jellyvision in Chicago that produced the multiple-award-winning, internationally recognized interactive program You Don't Know Jack. His freelance career has included work with Electronic Arts, Midway Games, MoveOn.org, the Heinemann Library, and Kindermusik International.
