Speaking SPANISH in Montana

Monday, May 12, 2014 at 7:00 pm
Bozeman, MT, Bozeman Public Library, Large Meeting Room

Are our demographics changing - and how quickly? What is the experience of Spanish speaking immigrants in our state, and what can we learn from this?

Come hear Leah Schmalzbauer, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Montana State University, share what she's learned during six years of ethnographic research with Mexican migrants to rural Montana. Dr. Schmalzbauer's interest in the intersections of gender, family and international migration have led her to probe the implications of transnationalism for gender relations, family survival strategies, consumption, and the trajectory of the second generation. Her book, The Last Best Place?: Gender, Family and Migration in the New West, will be published this fall by Stanford University Press.
