At the VOICE Center, we believe that everyone plays a vital role in helping to transform attitudes and actions regarding sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. We are inviting you to spend a day with us to learn how you can help prevent violence, support survivors, and create a safer community.
Becoming a VOICE Center volunteer provides students with an opportunity to become involved with positive change on campus while learning valuable peer advocacy and education skills. In addition, students may be able to receive paraprofessional or internship credits from some departments.
VOICE Center 101 Volunteer Training
The VOICE Center 101 Training is being offered on Saturday, January 24th to anyone who is interested in learning more about the issues impacting our campus and how they can get involved to help create change. The training is FREE and open to all MSU staff members and students (both current and incoming). Successful completion of the VOICE Center 101 training is a prerequisite to becoming a VOICE Center peer educator and/or advocate.
VOICE Center Peer Educators
After successful completion of the 101 training, you will have the opportunity to apply to continue the training this Fall to become a peer educator. Peer Educators will also be required to attend a 1 hour meeting each month to receive updates and continued education. Peer Educators will shadow several presentations during their first semester prior to co-facilitating presentations.
VOICE Center Advocates
The VOICE Center also hosts an advocate training every semester. The application process consists of a written application, reference checks, and an interview prior to selection into the advocate training program. Victim Advocates receive training to be able to provide information, crisis intervention and support services to anyone affected by interpersonal violence. Services that Peer Advocates provide include: answering the 24-Hour Confidential Support Line; meeting with survivors one on one; accompanying survivors to help with reporting, accessing medical, legal, and/or other services; talking with friends and family members of survivors about how to best support their loved one. Advocates are required to staff a weekly 2-hour shift in the office and attend bi-weekly 1 hour advocate meetings. Applications to become an advocate are available in our office.
