Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, poet, philosopher, botanist and novelist, provided a wealth of literary material for artists and composers. Goethe's poetic lyricism, stories of mysticism and the pursuit of the unattainable led the way toward German Romanticism. This program will explore meaning behind Goethe's texts through narration and musical performance. Several songs are taken from the novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship; composers include Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Webern and Eisler.
