Dr. Irene Grimberg will present "A Window into informal science education" on Friday, February 20, 2015 at 4:10 in 103 EPS.
In a world permeated by scientific discoveries, scientific literacy becomes necessary to fully engage in today's public discourse. "Life-long, life-wide, and life-deep" learning extends over time and places, and encompasses learner's beliefs and affinities. Informal science education is a conduit to such learning. This presentation focuses on the opportunities provided by informal science education to expand physics learning beyond schools. In particular, this presentation examines the impact on the audience's interest in physics after attending a show that merged Spoken-word poetry and dance inspired by physics concepts -Rhythms of the Universe http://www.celebratingeinstein.org/rhythms/index.htm . The success of approaches to disseminate science for the general public that combine science and art is attested by the wide cross-section of the public that attended this event, by their increased interest in physics, by their increase in love of poetry, and by narrowing the perceived gap between science and art.
