The MSU Jazz Ensembles present and perform a widely varying array of classic, latin, afro-cuban and contemporary big band jazz under the direction of saxophonist and recording artist, MSU faculty Ryan Matzinger. From cool blues to feet stomping funk these highly energetic, advanced jazz ensembles will surely entertain you with some of the best American big band jazz, funk and soul music you've ever heard. The One O'Clock Jazz Ensemble is comprised of 21 music students from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, USA. It is a top-tier, audition only, performing and recording ensemble representing the School of Music and the university's top scholar-musicians who toured and played extensively throughout Vienna, Prague and Germany last summer. The MSU Studio Jazz band is a collective of scholar-musicians from across the university steeped in the learning tradition of jazz, funk and improvised music practiced in the academic lab forum. The two ensembles perform in collaborative and feature concerts every fall and spring semester, and as a part of the Jazz Montana Festival with various world-class guest artists, ranging from tenor saxophone all-stars Paul Jeffrey, Javon Jackson and Harry Allen, to pianists like Judy Carmichael, Jeb Patton and Kamau Kenyatta, and others such as drummers Steve Houghton and Richard Sellers, bassists Bob Bowden and Nat Reeves, and local and regional professional jazz musicians. In the Spring semester of each year the groups focus largely on the production and completion of a full length album recording in which the student musicians are responsible for creating and composing the music, and then learning the recording process through active participation in seeing the entire process through from start to finish. The MSU Jazz Ensemble is thrilled to be presenting a show of jazz, funk and soul music for the community of Bozeman, MT.
