Four finalists for the position of MSU Legal Counsel will visit campus and hold public meet and greet sessions April 27-29.
Lavoie will hold a meet and greet session on Wednesday, April 29, from 11 a.m.-noon in 415 Reid Hall. Lavoie provides legal advice and representation and administers a satellite office as senior associate university counsel for the University of Maine System. Lavoie also negotiates contracts and other agreements and prepares educational materials and conducts training for administrators, faculty and staff on legal issues in higher education. Lavoie has a law degree from the University of Maine School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Kent State University. View CV
MSU’s Legal Counsel serves on the Montana University System five-member legal staff, reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel located in Helena, as well as to the president of MSU. In addition to serving the MSU Bozeman campus, Legal Counsel also serves the three affiliated campuses – MSU Billings, Great Falls College MSU and MSU Northern – as well as the Montana Agricultural Experiment Stations, Extension Service and Fire Services Training School. Legal Counsel is responsible for managing the institution’s legal affairs, including advising on legal rights, obligations and related matters. Legal Counsel also provides legal advice to the Commissioner of Higher Education, campus president and chancellors/CEOs, manages matters in litigation, and supervises both inside and outside counsel. Legal Counsel often serves as liaison to regulatory and legislative bodies, courts and attorneys general.
