From Elise's obituary:
All fondly remember a woman whose life was characterized both by the breadth but also the depth of her relationships from the Clyde Park Cow Belles to the Vassar Club of New York City. Present in all things were both her love of the land rooted in over forty years of cattle ranching in Montana and her deep appreciation for ideas, the arts and the life of the mind recognized in her being a recipient of both an Honorary Doctorate and a Blue and Gold Award from Montana State University and through her service on the board of Minnesota Public Radio. All who met Elise sensed a soul as deep and rich as the soil of her native Minnesota and a spirit as vast as the big sky of her adopted Montana. An accomplished reining horse competitor, Elise was passionate about riding and rode her horse Mac up until the last few months of her life. Elise openly credited the fullness and richness of her life to her 46 years of sobriety and the support and guidance of Alcoholics Anonymous. When Elise believed in a cause, she really cared. She got involved and committed both her heart and mind. Her philanthropy is well known throughout Montana and in Bozeman alone, the number of organizations she supported is too great to list. Some of Elise's patronage included: Montana State University – the American Indian Center and Native American Studies, School of Music, College of Agriculture, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks and Museum of the Rockies as well as The Ellen Theater, The Intermountain Opera, Bozeman Symphony and Montana Land Reliance.
