This talk examines the conspicuous absence of Romanian men from the realm of reproduction during the 1970s and 1980s Socialist pro-natalism. Specifically, how the authoritarian state capitalized on traditional patriarchy to enact a ‘patriarchy in power’ that eventually dis-empowered men in relation to their female partners. The avatars of modern patriarchy in present-day post-Socialist Romania are also scrutinized.
