- Strand Union Building, Ballrooms - view map
Alex Sheen founded the global nonprofit organization "because I said I would" following his father's death. In 2012, Alex's father succombed to small cell lung canc er and Alex was asked to give his father's eulogy. His father was an ordinary man who had made a lasting impact on the lives he touched through his outstanding integrity. Alex's father was a man of his word.
Alex titiled the eulogy "because I said I would" and at the funeral he handed out the first of what he called "Promise Cards". A Promise Card is a white 3 X 5 card with the words "because I said I would" printed in black in the lower right-hand corner. The precept is simple. An individual writes a commitment on one of these cards and completes it. Alex pledged to send 10 Promise Cards to anyone who requested them-anywhere in the world. Alex had no idea how large of a promise he had made.
Since 2012, over 3.15 million Promise Cards have been distributed to over 150 countries aruond the globe and that number does not even include cards printed using the free online template at becauseisaidiwould.com. Alex believes that a miracle is not needed to change the world, that the world can be changed through a series of promises made and kept.
Promise Cards will be available to all attendees so that they can begin changing the world around them one commitment at a time. There will also be refreshments and a discussion of the "because I said I would" movement with Alex following his speech.
Tickets can be picked up free of charge from the Bobcat Ticket Office and are also available at ticketswest.com.
