*CANCELLED* MOR Lecture: California Neoclassical Artist David Ligare Presents "On Using History"
- Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm
- Museum of the Rockies, Hager Auditorium - view map
In 1978 David Ligare decided that there were so many artists making pointedly contemporary works that, with full appreciation of the discoveries of modern art, he would do something else entirely. That “something else” turned out to be his embrace of Greco-Roman Classicism. His use of narrative painting and what he calls the “literate picture” connects him to the origins of western art – an alternate form of originality. The themes that he has utilized underscore his interest in rational visual analysis, compositional geometry and humanistic philosophy. He believes in Emmanuel Kant’s prescription “Sapere Aude,” “dare to be wise.” His lecture will be about his journey.
