The School of Art at Montana State University is pleased to announce "Liverwurst: Organ Donation and Art," a lecture by Ella Watson in support of National Organ Donor Month. The lecture will take place from 5-7 p.m. April 27, in Cheever Hall, Room 215.
Watson, artist and Gallery Director at the MSU School of Arts, will lecture on the need for organ donors and on her own experiences receiving a live-donor liver transplant in 2009. In addition, she will share what she has learned from her time as a starving artist and give a worthwhile commentary to young artists on resources that are available when all hell breaks loose, and one turns to their art for salvation.
Throughout her sickness, Ella frequented the halls of New York Presbyterian Hospital, donning bile bags, and in extreme pain. Throughout her sickness, Ella maintained a steady art practice, depicting what she saw from her hospital bed, discussing life and death with a comedic, macabre view of her situation. Over a year and a half, Ella produced more than 100 pieces of art and writing that have been compiled into a book "Liverwurst: Work Made at the onset of end-stage liver failure until live-donor organ transplantation (December 2007-June 2009)" which is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Liverwurst-end-stage-live-donor-transplantation-2007-June/dp/1463403984/ref=sr_1_1?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1492806929&sr=8-1&keywords=liverwurst+ella
"The process of transplantation is a grueling one -- demanding physical participation in a battery of tests and procedures as well as an emotional commitment to oneself and acceptance of the unknown. This is a beautiful catalogue of stories, photographs and drawings that tell Ella's story of chronic illness and her journey towards transplant. Throughout this process, she demonstrates a remarkable spirit and strength despite loss, illness and ever present chance of dying. Through her art and words she provides a window into her soul as she faces her own mortality with grace, maturity and humor." --- Ariana Rose, Nurse Practitioner
