The Influence of Transformational Leadership and Group Diversity on Generating Innovative Ideas Using TRIZ - A Case Study in UAE Companies
The rapidly changing dynamics of global industry are forcing companies to continue to improve methods for harnessing the creativity of their employees and use that creativity to drive innovation. Frequently projects to develop new products fail at the end of the development process or during commercialization. These failures often have their origin at the very beginning of the development process, during the pre-development phase called the Fuzzy Front End (FFE). To manage this phase, there is a need to focus on idea and concept generation through using new techniques like the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). TRIZ is a knowledge-based systematic methodology of idea management. TRIZ is composed of 40 principles developed through studying 40,000 patent ideas. Prior research has integrated TRIZ with different techniques like Quality Functional Deployed (QFD), Brainstorming and Mind mapping with demonstrated improvements in key innovation measures.
There is a need to further understand how TRIZ methods interact with transformational leadership behaviors and team make-up to continue to improve the effectiveness of the FFE. Prior work has shown that transformational leadership has positive impacts on a variety of organizational outcomes including improved performance of R&D functions. However, the relationship between transformational leadership on the generation of innovative ideas using TRIZ within a diverse group has not been previously investigated. This research will apply TRIZ problem solving in semi government companies while measuring the full range of leadership behaviors of team leaders and group diversity to determine how each effects innovation performance. Measures will be made on the performance of the team during a case study exercise. These exercises will be developed using a real challenge faced by the organization. Measures will be gathered using previously validated instruments of leadership, team diversity, and innovation performance. Multivariate quantitative analysis of this data will be completed to determine the relationship between these factors.
