Dr. Ron Shen (UC Berkeley) will present "Sum-Frequency Spectroscopy for Surface Analysis."
Our research is in the broad area of interaction of light with matter, comprising condensed matter physics, molecular physics, nonlinear optics, laser spectroscopy, and surface sciences. Sum-frequency spectroscopy has been developed into a most versatile and powerful surface analytical tool over the years. Recent progress has been in the development of the technique for applications toward more relevant problems. We will discuss in this talk how it can be used to find microscopic structure of a charged water interface that is essential for a molecular-level understanding of electrochemistry. Other possible applications will be discussed if time allows.
