Visiting artist, Mike Helke, will be giving an artist lecture on Thursday, October 5th at 4 pm in Cheever 214. Mike Helke holds an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Prior to that, he studied ceramics at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and spent formative years as a studio artist and employee of Northern Clay Center. He is currently an adjunct instructor at the University of Wisconsin—River Falls. Helke works in earthenware, generally covered in crackle and saturated black slips, layered with clear or celadon-like glazes. He uses decorative shapes on the surface of playful forms to create dynamic positive and negative spaces. They are part contemplative studies in composition and part everyday object.
Before the lecture, Mike will be in the MSU ceramic studio on the first floor of Haynes Hall from 9 am to 4 pm. Following the lecture please join us for a public reception in the Dean's Gallery from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Mike will be selecting and announcing prize winners for the 2nd Annual Juried Ceramics Exhibition, Cup Aesthetic which will be shown in the Dean's Gallery (217 Cheever) thru Friday, November 10, 2017.
Cup Aesthetic, a show of ceramic vessels created by MSU ceramics students, will have prize winners selected by visiting artist Mike Helke.
The Dean's Gallery is open M-F 8 am to 5 pm.
