CBE Seminar Series Presents Dr. Jeffrey Marlow
- Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 4:10pm to 5:00pm
- Roberts Hall, 301 - view map
Dr. Jeffrey Marlow is geobiologist postdoctoral scholar at Harvard University, where he works with Prof. Peter Girguis on projects that seek to quantify and understand metabolic activity in mixed microbial communities. This work has developed and utilized a range of culture-independent tools to track metabolites, characterize stable isotope incorporation, and sequence post-translational modifications in anaerobic methane oxidizing communities at marine methane seeps. Jeff's talk “Methane Oxidation on the Seafloor: Decoding the Determinants of Metabolic Rate” will highlight recent findings of rock-hosted metabolic activity including endolithic rates of methane oxidation that are among the highest recorded and explore the role of rock-hosted methanotrophy in the global carbon cycle.
