The School of Art at Montana State University and the Waller-Yoblonsky Gallery present The Modicum Moment, a solo exhibition by undergraduate student, Holden Roberts, on exhibit Monday, February 5 - Friday, February 9, 2018. The gallery is located at the Melvin Graduate Art Studios on West Lincoln Street. The closing reception will be held Friday, February 9, 2018 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will be free and open to the public. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.
The work represents a shift in direction by Roberts from his layered wood sculptures that are on view at Townshend's Tea House in downtown Bozeman until April 1, 2018.
Displaying the latest work of Roberts, on view will be a multimedia works using videos projected upon oil paintings and wood sculptures. The work investigates time and the essence of the moving figure.
A new and refreshing look at how humans can relate to landscape and time, the work invites the viewer to watch moving shapes of color projected on a stretched canvas with abstract representational shapes using oil paint, provoking an interesting dialogue about what it means for a static object to compress time and a being. According to Roberts, “I want to capture an exact point of time using static materials. We are constantly moving through micro and macro experiences and will never and can never stop time or stop a moment to study it in a fixed state. I want to sculpt a fraction of reality with a focus on caring about this idea of a point in space and time. Using projection, wood, and paint as a vessel to hold a modicum amount of time, I give power to my objects to hold the moment within”
