As part of the IoE Distinguished Lecturer Series, Dr. William Inskeep will give a talk titled "Exploring Hot Spots for Thermophiles" on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7pm in the Procrastinator Theater.
Dr. Inskeep has studied thermophilic microorganisms in Yellowstone for nearly two decades, focusing on environments once thought to be void of any life. Yet, a number of different microorganisms are adapted to the extreme temperatures and geochemistry of geothermal systems. He has sought to understand the distribution of different microbes that specialize in transforming elements common to the Yellowstone hot-spot, including sulfur, iron and/or arsenic. Thermophiles may hold clues about the metabolism of early life forms on the planet.
