Curvature Estimates of Point Clouds as a Tool in Quantitative Prostate Cancer Classification
According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 9 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer during their life. The choice of treatment is often based on how severe the cancer is thought to be, which is determined by a qualitative assessment of tissue biopsies. However, this purely qualitative assessment has been shown to lead to inconsistencies. In response to this problem, we first develop a way to estimate the curvature of a point cloud. Using this method, we then propose a quantitative method of classifying the severity of prostate cancer based on curvature estimates of rings of nuclei appearing in the biopsy.
