The President's Fine Arts Series is brought to you by the Montana State University Office of the President and the College of Arts & Architecture. This year's series Legacy + Art: Celebrating 125 Years of Creativity honors Montana State University's 125 Anniversary and will take place during the month of March.
We are thrilled to bring this work back out into the daylight of the public eye! The majority of the collections of Bob and Gennie are held in the state museums: the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Missoula Art Museum and the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings. There are many pieces long cherished in collections of friends and family, in Bozeman and across the country.
The pieces that we share with you here at MSU are selected from our personal collections, thus some of the most loved work that we live with in our homes. We feel that this little show in the Dean's office of the Arts and Architecture Department is a choice representation of the range of their work … from Gennie's luscious landscapes, endearing portraits and Non-Objective exploration and passion for Abstract Expressionism in print and paint, to Bob's quirky poignant commentaries and responses to the world as it played out through his lifetime. His obsession with the form of the tie to his homages to loved ones in personal and public spheres continue to mystify and delight.
Additional features of the show are a binder full of sketches, copies from some 90 of Bob's sketchbooks, and a slide show from the Preview Galleries of both of their work that can be seen on the website, www.deweeseart.com . If you haven't yet visited the website, it is a tour through the life works and publications and writings by and about these prolific and beloved pioneers of the Emergence of Modernism in Montana. There is a link on the website to Michele Corriel's Master's Thesis in Art History by that title.
