CBE Seminar Series: Dr. William “Barny” Whitman
- Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 4:10pm to 5:00pm
- Roberts Hall, 301 - view map
Dr. Barny Whitman will be presenting “Heterologous expression of the methylreductase of methanogens: A peek into the making of a complex enzyme system,” at this week's seminar.
Barny is a professor in the Department of Microbiology at The University of Georgia, Athens. He joined the department in 1982 after his post doctorate with Dr. Ralph Wolfe at the University of Illinois. Barny’s lab examines the physiology, systematics, and ecology of free-living bacteria and archaea of environmental importance, but especially the methane-producing archaea and marine alpha proteobacteria. He uses an integrated approach to understanding the complete organism including the biochemical mechanisms it uses to accomplish day-to-day tasks of living and the interactions with other organisms and its environment. Barny is the Director of the Editorial Office and the supervising editor for Bergey’s Manual Trust, which endeavors to reconcile taxonomy with phylogeny and understand the biological basis for the prokaryotic groups. His talk will focus on his work with the methylreductase enzyme and its assembly in Methanococcus maripaludis.
