Popular media disparages family involvement in students’ transitions to college as “helicopter parenting,” but faculty, academic advisors, and other student success professionals know this to be an oversimplification of the relationships students have with their families.
This session, a follow-up to the session led by Tricia Seifert's Big Sky Thinkers research team in February, builds from the team's research findings to advance a new approach to supporting first-year students that addresses the complexity of student-family relationships in a developmentally appropriate manner.
This session is a customized "reprise" of a session presented by team members at the national ACPA (College Student Educators, International) Convention this past March.
