Astronomy Day 2012

A free afternoon of astronomy-related events for kids and adults will be held in Bozeman on Saturday, April 21, including a talk by comet-hunter David Levy and a former Montana State University student who now works on Mars rover projects.

The event takes place at the Museum of the Rockies from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and all Astronomy Day 2012 activities, including admission to the museum, are free that afternoon.

Kids' activities include Face Painting, Balloon rockets, NASA Star Finders and Solar System Splatter Paintings. Exhibits in the main lobby will feature activities, information and give-aways from NASA missions and Montana State University researchers. Solar observations will take place throughout the afternoon, weather permitting.

At 1:10 p.m., David Levy will present " Poetry of the Night: Finding a relationship between literature and the night sky."At 3 p.m., MSU alumnus Jaime Waydo presents "From Montana to Mars: life at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory." An autograph session with both Levy and Waydo takes place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Planetarium shows include Star Signs Spring and Stars of the Pyramids.

"Astronomy Day is one of the largest astronomy events in the state," said organizer Kathryn Williamson. "We have something for every age group, and everything is free."

The event is sponsored by the Museum of the Rockies, MSU's Astrobiology Biogeocatalysis Research Center, Department of Education, Extended University, Solar Physics Research Group, Space Public Outreach Team (SPOT), Women in Science and Engineering and Society of Physics Students; along with the Montana Space Grant Consortium, Southwest Montana Astronomical Society, SPIE and NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
