Transit of Venus Viewing Event

On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, Venus will pass between the Earth and the Sun for the last time in over 100 years. This historic astronomical event will be visible in Bozeman from 4 pm until sunset. The Montana Space Grant Consortium (MSGC), in association with the College of Letters and Science and College of Engineering, is organizing a public event at Bobcat Stadium to celebrate the last transit of Venus in our lifetime.

Activities

The event will provide safe solar viewing glasses, telescopes with solar filters, displays from MSU science and engineering students and faculty, as well as educational activities for kids related to the Sun and the Solar System. There will also be activities for kids such as face painting and a bounce house.

Concessions

Concessions at the Cat Shack will be available.

Tentative Schedule  

3:30 pm  Gates open at the MSU Bobcat Stadium (Gate 8, SE side of the stadium)

4:00 pm  Welcome address by MSU President Waded Cruzado

4:05 pm The transit starts, first contact (ingress exterior)

4:30 pm  Presentation on the Sun-Earth connection by the Space Public Outreach Team (SPOT)   

5:30 pm  Presentation on the Transit of Venus by MSU Physics Professor David McKenzie

The Transit of Venus will be visible at Bobcat Stadium even in the case of clouds or rain.  A live NASA TV broadcast from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite will be on the big screen at the stadium rain or shine.
