Film Screening focuses on political identity for De-Steretype Me Day

Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 1:30pm

The Montana State University chapter of Sustained Dialogue will screen a pre-release version of the political documentary, "Follow the Leader," for De-stereotype Me Day.

"Follow the Leader" is a real-life coming-of-age story of three traditional American boys with Presidential dreams. At sixteen-years-old, high school Class Presidents Ben, D.J. & Nick are all conservatives who plan to continue leading their peers as President someday. Over three life-changing years, they split into Republican, Democratic and Independent camps as each reconsiders his lofty ambitions.

De-Stereotype Me Day is an event to catalyze re-examination of the stereotypes we perpetuate daily by providing opportunity for discussion. The event, as well as weekly dialogues, aims to equip students with the communication tools necessary to explore and share experiences, and challenges students to replace stereotypes with more meaningful, humanistic facets of identity. Given the context of election year, and considering the flurry of polarizing assumptions and stereotypes doled out by all sides, the theme of this years' De-Stereotype Me Day is political identity.

Sustained Dialogue is a group that addresses social and community issues through organized discussion and resulting action campaigns. SD seeks to improve problems on campus through naturally evolving dialogue and inspired social action. MSU is one 16 campuses internationally to be members in the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network, and the only campus west of the Mississippi. SDCN seeks to both transform campus climates and is to develop everyday leaders who engage differences as strengths to improve campuses, workplaces, and communities.

Thursday October 18, at 1:30pm in the Procrastinator Theater the film will be screened. The event is free and open to the public. Following the 74 minute film, there will be a question and answer Skype session with Filmmaker Jonathan Goodman Levitt. Free popcorn will be provided!
