Complexities of Qualitative Research

Dr. Betsy Palmer, associate professor of educational research & statistics in adult and higher education, will discuss insights into qualitative methodology that she gained while conducting an ethnographic study of schooling in a remote area of eastern Nepal. Dr. Palmer will discuss the ethical implications of employing accepted western qualitative methods in a non-western cultural setting. She will also describe several context-specific challenges that will have a lasting influence on her methodological decision-making for studies both at home and abroad.
Dr. Palmer spent academic year 2011-2012 on sabbatical in Nepal conducting her research.
