Invisible War Screening
Strand Union Building, Procrastinator Theater
The MSU VOICE Center, Army ROTC, and Office of Veteran Services are hosting a FREE screening of the award-winning documentary, "The Invisible War" on Monday, October 29th at 5:30pm in the MSU Procrastinator Theater. The screening is open to the public and will be followed by a Q&A with survivors featured in the documentary and local experts in violence prevention.
Winner of the Audience Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, The Invisible War was hailed as "shocking and important" by Entertainment Weekly and has helped shape the national discussion around the epidemic of sexual assault in the military. The Invisible War urges us all, civilian and military alike, to fight for a system that protects our men and women in uniform.
Military sexual trauma continues to impact our male and female military members at an alarming rate despite the Department of Defense's Zero Tolerance Policy.
* Since 2006, more than 95,000 service members have been sexually assaulted in the U.S. military
* More than 86% of service members do not report their assault
* Less than five percent of all sexual assaults are put forward for prosecution, and less than a third of those cases result in imprisonment
The MSU VOICE Center, Army ROTC and the Office of Veteran Services are partnering to bring this powerful documentary to the Bozeman community for the purpose of education and reform. We know that our troops protect our country and our freedom - and we believe that by equipping our Cadets and troops with real, firsthand knowledge on the severity of this issue and the skills necessary to prevent sexual assault, we can have a positive impact on preventing sexual assaults in the military.
The panel of experts following the film will include:
Sarah Albertson, Marine Corps veteran, survivor, and MSU graduate student
Susan Avila-Smith, Army veteran, survivor, founder of VetWOW: http://www.vetwow.com/susan's_bio.htm
Dr. Brian Kassar, Faculty Advisor for Men Stopping Rape
