The Werner Quartet Performs at Reynolds

Friday, January 11, 2013 from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Howard Hall, Reynolds Recital Hall

The Werner Quartet returns to Reynolds Recital Hall on January 11th for an evening of classical music.

By invitation of the School of Music at MSU, it has become an annual tradition for the quartet toperform for the Guest Artist Series, where it has enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the Bozemancommunity for over 11 years.

As part of a world tour of music from Baroque to Contemporary, this evening's performance will feature some of quartet's favorite works, including some from their Carnegie Hall debut in 2012.

Highlights will include Boccherini's Sonata in A Major, an exercise in melodic simplicity and effortless virtuosity, and Beethoven's Op. 5 cello sonatas. While still fully grounded in the Classical style, these early works already belie a sense of the dawning age of Romanticism. If there ever was a composer who realized the emotional capacity of music, it was Rachmaninoff. Featured after intermission will be his cello sonata, a jewel of the literature and paragon of Romanticism, complete with lush melodies and rich harmonies. A point of reflection in the program will be Arvo Pärt's "Magnificat," combining timeless spirituality with a contemporary thrust of atonality. The evening will close with a thrilling rendition of Bizet's Carmen Fantasy. In bringing to life some of Carmen's most beloved and wellknown themes, the quartet's own arrangement calls for dazzling virtuosity and a commanding sense of operatic drama.

As part of their commitment to children and the importance of arts in education, the Quartet will be mentoring in several of the one-room rural schools in the Gallatin Valley early in the new year.

The concert will be held at Reynolds Recital Hall on the campus of Montana State University at 7:30PM on Friday, January 11.

Tickets may be purchased at the door the evening of the concert beginning at 6:30PM.
