Service Learning Summit

The Service Learning Summit is a day-long opportunity for faculty members and service learning practitioners to learn more about this active teaching and learning practice from both campus-based and out of state experts. The Summit will include sessions on service learning best practices, the assessment of student learning, and building strong community partnerships. President Cruzado will be delivering the opening remarks for the Summit to address the importance of engagement and service learning.
Presenting the keynote address is Dr. Barbara Jacoby, a leading practitioner and highly accomplished author in the service learning field. Dr. Jacoby has written four books on the practice of service learning, published numerous scholarly articles, taught service learning courses, and lead efforts focusing on service learning programming. She was a member of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education from 1980 to 2011. Dr. Jacoby has held many leadership positions in ACPA - College Student Educators International and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
Jacoby is currently Faculty Associate for Leadership and Community Service-Learning at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union - Center for Campus Life at the University of Maryland, College Park. In this role, she facilitates initiatives involving academic partnerships, service-learning, and civic engagement. Also at the University of Maryland, Jacoby is Affiliate Associate Professor in the Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs, where she teaches doctoral and undergraduate courses. Among many other awards and accomplishments, Jacoby is a Fellow of the University's Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and was a 2007-2008 Center for Teaching Excellence - Lilly Fellow. She continues to write and consult extensively, making presentations across the U.S. and around the globe. Her institution and professional associations have recognized her outstanding work on behalf of service-learning and commuter students.
