Letters and Science Distinguished Professor Lecture

Tomáš Gedeon, who was recently named Letters and Science Distinguished Professor at Montana State University, will give his inaugural lecture titled "Mathematical Modeling in Biology: Successes and Challenges." The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Leigh Lounge hosted by the College of Letters and Science. The public is welcome to attend.

Gedeon, a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, will discuss the use of mathematical models to describe complex biological systems. He will share some successes in the use of mathematical models in modeling HIV, microbial consortia and transcriptional elongation. He will also discuss some mathematical challenges that limit applications to high dimensional systems in biology or climate modeling.

Gedeon's contributions to a wide range of applied mathematical problems are nationally and internationally recognized. Over the last few years, he has published several important papers in mathematical neuroscience, systems biology and mathematical biology, and has developed an international reputation for his excellent and insightful contributions to the understanding of the structure and function of biological systems.
