Welcome to Yellowstone! Tourism in America's First National Park.

Saturday, September 21, 2013
Museum of the Rockies

Curated by MOR's own Michael Fox, this fascinating exhibit presents Yellowstone National Park's thrilling history as America's foremost tourist destination. Welcome to Yellowstone! is highlighted with artifacts from the Museum's Hamilton-Povah Yellowstone Collection, acquired from Eleanor Povah in 2009, as well as artifacts, photographs and movie footage from the National Park Service and other historical collections. The exhibit traces the ways visitors traveled to and from the park, where they stayed and where they played during the golden age of American tourism.

Exhibition themes, artifacts and historical collections explore:

Entrepreneurs in Yellowstone Park - An in-depth look at the history of the many independent businesspeople who accommodated visitors to the region, and their contributions to the Park's history.

American Indians in Yellowstone - Examines American Indians who lived within and visited the Yellowstone region, and explores the meaning of "Indianness" and its effect on the tourist experience.

The Visitor Experience and the Park - Documents the many ways in which the visitor experience has evolved through the past century, even though the physical nature of the Park has changed very little.

Transportation and Making the Park Accessible - How evolving modes of transportation have changed the Park over time, from early horseback tours to automobiles and gas stations to today's snowmobile access.

The National Park Ideal - From early ideas about conservation versus preservation, to the introduction of the automobile, to contemporary issues of Park management and access, Yellowstone continues to be at the forefront of the national and international discussion.
